Curriculum & Instruction

Students at the Center for Global Studies engage in an international
studies interdisciplinary program of study that includes English,
Social Studies, and either Arabic language, Chinese language, or
Japanese language. Remaining coursework is completed through
a partnership with Brien McMahon High School where students may
choose from a wide variety and levels of courses (including honors
and AP) in all academic areas.

The CGS promotes global awareness and language immersion
through travel and our visiting student program. Students select
from one of three concentrations; the concentration they choose
determines the CGS component courses that they take.

Concentrations include:
Middle East Studies, Chinese Studies, and Japanese Studies.

Students take math, science, physical education, music, and
additional courses in English, social studies, foreign language, etc.
at BMHS.  Students may participate in both CGS and BMHS
activities, clubs, and sports.

Standards-State Frameworks: The CGS follows all Connecticut
state performance and content standards in Art, Social Studies,
World Languages, and English.

CAPT Standards/Objectives: Students in 9th and 10th grades are
prepared rigorously for the CAPT examinations taken in 10th grade
in all of their major subjects.  There is a particular emphasis placed
upon reading for understanding and persuasive writing in English
and Social Studies classes.  Teachers provide CAPT exercises and
practice tests and integrate CAPT skills into the regular curriculum.

As a result of solid preparation, CGS students perform very well on
the CAPT test, and our scores have increased for the past four
years.  In 2011, 99% of CGS students scored Proficient or above in
both Reading and Writing.  In addition, 72% scored at Goal or
Advanced in Reading, and 85% scored at Goal or Advanced in
Writing.
